I am a freelance illustrator based in Norwich. I’ve worked as an in house designer in both publishing and design companies, but for the past eight years I have been freelance (www.fionagowen.co.uk), specialising in illustrated maps. I work with clients such as the National Trust, Natural England, design agencies and museums.
Non-fiction books have always fascinated me, while studying the Childrens book illustration MA at Cambridge school of art, I have enjoyed exploring ways to communicate non fiction subjects. I’m inspired by the forgotten, the misunderstood and unusual; and enjoy creating quirky characters in order to highlight their stories.
I came second place In the 2020 Carmelite prize and have recently been exploring ways of working using a combination of ink, pencil, printmaking, collage and digital, enjoying the freedom it has given me to play with artwork.
When not working, I love to escape to remote places in the campervan, to explore with my husband and dog.
